IV Sedation
According to the American Dental Association, 22 percent of people skip or postpone dental visits due to fear of the dentist. By doing so, they risk deterioration of their oral health, which can lead to pain and extensive restorative care. At Moore Dentistry, located in Alpharetta, GA, we offer IV sedation to help our patients with high dental anxiety cope during dental procedures. This not only helps to reduce anxiety during treatment but also makes receiving care much more comfortable.
What is IV Sedation Dentistry?
IV sedation dentistry is a form of conscious sedation that helps patients feel calm and relaxed during dental procedures. Conscious sedation (sometimes referred to as twilight sedation) does not put you to sleep completely. It does, however, make you less aware of what is happening around you. This type of sedation is safer than general anesthesia because you do not need support breathing. IV sedation differs from nitrous oxide or medicine given in pill form, as it is administered by the dentist intravenously (through your vein).
IV Sedation has several important benefits:
- It works very quickly and allows you to be pain free during the treatment.
- It has an amnesic effect, so you won’t remember the procedure.
- It makes it easier for the dentist to perform more treatment in just one visit, which saves you valuable time.
Who is a Good Candidate for IV Sedation?
IV sedation dentistry is safe and effective for most people, but it is essential to talk to Dr. Moore beforehand to ensure it is the right medical choice for you. It is a good option for people with a sensitive gag reflex or who need extensive and timely dental treatment. We will take special precautions if you have a heart condition or other medical condition that could be affected by sedation. Otherwise, this is an excellent option for anyone who wants to relax and feel comfortable during their dental visit.
What Is the Process?
After reviewing your dental and medical histories, Dr. Moore will provide you with guidelines on how to prepare for IV sedation. Typically, you will be asked to refrain from eating and drinking for 6-12 hours prior to the procedure. You may also be asked to temporarily discontinue taking certain medications (unless previously approved by Dr. Moore). Make sure you have someone who can drive you to and from the appointment, as you will not be able to drive after the procedure.
During the procedure, an IV will be placed in your arm. Dr. Moore will run sedative medications through the IV, which will be effective almost immediately. Throughout the entirety of the procedure, Dr. Moore and his trained and dedicated team will monitor your vitals (oxygen, blood pressure, heart rate, etc.). Your safety is always our top priority. You will not feel any pain or discomfort or remember the procedure.
After the procedure is complete, it is normal to feel tired and drowsy for several hours. Plan on taking it easy over the course of the next 24 hours. Avoid rigorous activity, unapproved medications, alcohol and operating heavy machinery. Adverse reactions are rare but contact Dr. Moore immediately if you have any concerning symptoms. He is always available through the office during regular business hours and by his cell phone for after hours.
